Gatsby Summary: Nick Carraway moves from Minnesota to West Egg in Long Island. He connects with his cousin Daisy who lives in the more fashionable area of East Egg. Nick travels to New York with Daisy’s husband Tom to meet Tom’s mistress Myrtle. He later attends a party at his rich, mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby’s house, where he befriends Gatsby. Gatsby reveals to Nick and Jordan, a friend of Daisy’s who Nick develops a romance with, that he had known Daisy a long time ago and was in love with her, and wanted Nick’s help to get her back. Nick invites Daisy over to tea without telling her that Gatsby will be there. They reconnect and start an affair. Tom gets suspicious, and takes them all to lunch in New York. Tom confronts Gatsby about Daisy, and Daisy decides to stay with Tom. Daisy and Gatsby drive back in Gatsby’s car, and the rest of them drive back together and discover that Gatsby’s car hit and killed Myrtle. Nick learns that Daisy was driving, but Gatsby took the blame. Myrtle’s husband George finds out that Gatsby owned the car, and assumes he was the killer. He finds Gatsby in his swimming pool and shoots him, then shoots himself. Nick organizes a funeral for Gatsby, where he meets Gatsby’s father. Finally, he moves back to the Midwest. The Namesake By Jhumpa Lahiri A Bengali couple moves from Calcutta to Boston after the husband, Ashoke has a near fatal train accident and receives advice to live in America. Ashima, the wife, has a hard time adjusting to her new lifestyle while Ashoke is working as a professor at MIT, but their neighbors the Montgomerys serve as a guide to American culture and interaction. Ashima discovers that she is pregnant and sends a letter to her grandmother to ask for advice on the baby's name which is a tradition. However, the letter of the name options is lost in between Calcutta and Boston, continuing the theme of belonging. When the baby is born, Ashoke and Ashima are forced to name the baby due to American systems. Ashoke names the baby Gogol because he was reading Nikolai Gogol's "The Overcoat" when he almost died in the train crash. The Gangulis make friends that are also Bengali to feel more at home and find replacements for their family. The friends attend the annaprasan/ the rice ceremony and the differences between American and Bengali culture are shown when the Montgomerys come. Part of the rice ceremony is picking life paths, and Gogol doesn't touch either of them. As time goes on, Ashima and Ashoke's family members die, and they visit, but hey discover that they are not as connected tto Calcutta as they previously were. The Gangulis move to a suburb and Gogol is sent to school where his parents have decided that his official name is Nikhil, but he only responds to Gogol. When his class takes a trip to a graveyard, Gogol becomes more aware of how unique his name is. The Gangulis decide to go to India for 8 months, but when he returns none of his classmates seem to care. In middle school, he gets very self-consious when the class has to read "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol, and he discovers the depressing life of the author. After being embarrassed about his name, Gogol changes his name to Nikhil legally and starts off college with his new identity. He starts to date a girl named Ruth, but that doesn't turn into much after she goes to Europe and they decide they have both changed. One visit home, Ashoke tells Gogol about his accident and why he is named Gogol, but Gogol continues to be called Nikhil. Gogol then enters a relationship with a girl in New York named Maxine who comes from a wealthy family, but still lives at home. Gogol is attracted to the glamour and luxury of their life and continues to stray from his parents and younger sister, Sonia. Suddenly, Ashoke dies of a heart attack which brings the family back to Pemberton Road. Maxine doesn't understand the toll the death has taken on Gogol and they break up. Later, Gogol is set up by his mom with a girl from his childhood named Moushumi. They end up dating and getting married, but Moushumi cheats on him with a childhood crush. The book ends with Gogol in his old room looking at the Nikolai Gogol short stories that his father bought for him.
