    Gatsby:

Socio-economic class: Gatsby became rich for Daisy to win her over; she chose Tom because he was wealthy and came from similar status and family.

American Dream: Jay Gatsby chases a dream of wealth and prosperity but they way he gets there doesn’t make him happy or fulfilled in the end.

    Namesake:

American Dream: Gogol’s parents immigrate to America for a better life but its not what they expected in the beginning

Cultural Differences: Gogol’s Indian heritage/culture and his “American” culture clashes. His Indian background is sometimes misunderstood, ex: his name is a source of confusion at school, then he tries to change it but it comes back into his life etc…

Generational Difference: Gogol tries to separate himself from his Parents who are more in tune with their Indian heritage, him and his sister are very different

Belonging: Gogol tries to get away from his Indian background and gets close to his GF’s family but finds he belongs there too

    Ceremony:

Belonging/Social isolation: Tayo doesn’t exactly fit in with his veteran friends, but he also feels like an outsider form his family, pueblo people, and is discriminated by whites. He finds belonging with Betonie and Night swan

Nature: Tayo becomes more connected to Nature on his journey to healing and his ceremony, nature is also present in the traditional poems and Pueblo culture

Discrimination: cowboys and Emo discriminate against Tayo because he’s Indian and half white
